The Secret of Healthy Food for the Mind

October 30, 2008

Talk to any successful entrepreneur or executive and they will tell you one of the key elements to their success is that they never stop searching for new ideas, learning new techniques or reading the latest books.  Successful people have a drive to learn and expand their base of knowledge to match the ever changing landscape of business around them.

Every person should take time everyday to “Feed their Mind”.  It does not matter the subject and it does not matter how you receive it.  What does matter is that you take the time to stimulate your mind in a new direction form the normal grind that keeps it active and strong.  Think of it as taking your mind for a run each day so it stays in shape.

How To Feed

Traditionally mind feeding is done by picking up a book or magazine and reading or sitting and watching TV.  You can consider TV watching as “junk food”.  Speaking of TV, according to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube.  All that does is make your mind fat, dumb and not very happy.

I am not advocating anyone stop watching TV cold turkey.  I like to watch it as much as anyone, but if you are serious about success in your life and in your business, you need to create balance and you need to stimulate your mind so that your creative juices do not dry up watching the same ad for the same product over and over again.

  • Get a book that interests you, if you like to sit and read for a while.
  • Get  a set of CD’s and play them in your car if you drive a lot.
  • Download a book or podcast that interests you into your iPod or MP3 and listen while on a walk or working around the house.
  • Take an online course on a subject that interest you.
  • Filter topics through your web browser of articles that interest you.

Technology has made it so easy to find and share knowledge that there are no excuses for not finding the time to exercise your mind each day.

What to Feed It

What you choose to feed your mind is all about what excites and interests you.  Whether the topic is business, spirtual, travel, history, excerise or anything else that stimulates thought in you.

To help this process we will be posting different books, CD’s podcasts, websites and courses that you might want to consider as part of your mind diet.  The bottomline is to be successful in life as well as business you need to continually strive to grow, learn and evolve……
